Alpine Cowboys shortstop Gary Hess suffered a compound fracture of his right ankle while trying to score at home in a Tuesday night game versus San Angelo. Hess, 20, was honored earlier as Pittsburg Pa athletes of the year for baseball, basketball and track. He is a West Virginia Wesleyan College graduate and had just arrived from Pittsburgh before the injury.

Alpine Bands Set Second Annual Variety Show Tuesday
Alpine high school and junior high bands will present their second annual variety show at 8 pm on Tuesday May 5 in the Sul Ross Auditorium. The fundraiser, organized by the Band Boosters Club, features new scenery and acts with participation from Central and Centennial bands. Proceeds benefit the bands.

David C Walker 47 a longtime Big Bend cattleman died in Alpine likely from a heart attack Thursday night April 23. Son of a Brewster County pioneer family, he helped eradicate brucellosis in the Davis Mountains region. He was survived by his mother and brothers Hershall of Alpine and Pink of Houston. Funeral services were held Saturday at Livingston Funeral Chapel with Rev. R Streetman officiating. burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery.

Seventeen Alpine Students Take Merit Scholarship Test
Seventeen Alpine High students took the Ishour National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test Tuesday under Principal James Crawford. The test begins the merit scholarship process sponsored by about 90 organizations and the National Merit Scholarship Corp. Semifinalists will be named next fall with a second exam. winners announced in spring 1960.

Alpine Pupils Qualify For State Meet In Lubbock
Five Alpine High School students qualified for the state Inter scholastic League contests from the regional meet in Lubbock last Saturday. Tony Warnock earned honors in number sense and slide rule. Dennis Williams placed second in boys’ declamation. Linda Kay and Harriet Carpenter teamed for doubles tennis. Sharon Welch won girls’ declamation. Winters High edged Alpine 60 to 52 for regional champion, with Perryton third. Alpine’s dream all around tennis title fell short as Tech officials did not count a combined score. The Alpine group heads to Austin May 7 to 9 for state competition with sponsors.

Alpine Cowboys defeated the San Angelo Pirates 18 to 1 in the opener and won 13 to 7 the next night. Shortstop Gary Hess broke a bone in his right leg while attempting to score in the seventh inning of Tuesday’s game and was taken to Brewster County Memorial Hospital, with a week possible absence and season in jeopardy.

City Secretary Lee Cowell says absentee voting for Alpine's 150000 dollar water system improvement bond election runs through Tuesday May 5. Applications and ballots are available at the city office. The election will be held Saturday May 9 in the Chamber of Commerce building.

3rd Annual NAIA Tourney Set For Alpine
Nation wide publicity is beginning to appear on the 3rd annual NAIA baseball tournament to be held at Kokernot Field in Alpine Tune 25. Ray Van Stelleaf Sul Ross coach Rankin Williams of Southwest Oklahoma and Al Garten of New Mexico Western will direct. The event uses a double elimination format with 14 to 15 games. Season tickets at 5 dollars for eight games go on sale soon. The NAIA will nominate eight teams from nine regions, with completion of selections expected by May 4. San Diego State won the 1958 title.

Sophomore League season opens despite high winds at Sul Ross
Opening ceremonies drew 2150 fans as gusts to 40 mph tested crowd. Grady Terry led officials from Midland with Herbert Kokernot and Mayor Lockhart among dignitaries. The Sul Ross band played the national anthem while an American Legion guard raised the flag. Telegrams were read from lawmakers and sports figures including J T Rutherford and T A Yaw as well as Gov.
