Ranch-born Girls Are Experts With Rifles at Sul Ross
Sul Ross and Alpine received publicity in the Star-Telegram pictorial section with a full page on school activities. It showed girls at the college rifle range, lessons from Border Patrolman Harold E. Halsey, a student shooting from horseback, and Miss Connie Duncan of Alpine, state woman pistol shooting champion. The article discusses an option plan to fund purchase, delays, and potential legislative action, with Fort Stockton Senator H. L. Winfield expressing interest but doubt about timing. It traces land ownership near the fort, noting James’s 1854 survey work and continued ownership since 1886, and questions whether funds can be raised before the option expires.
