Robbers raided four Fort Davis establishments including CA Bill Fryar's drugstore and the West Texas Utilities office. The drugstore safe was broken and cash taken while the utility office safe was opened. Front door jimmied at the Wilkson drygoods store. school appeared undisturbed. Local sheriff and a ranger led investigations.
Odds and ends about the Alpine Cowboys and the Sophomore League cover official scorers, rosters, and rookie rules. William J. Weiss of San Mateo will handle statistics, with Glen Burgess Charlie Hunter and Jim Glasscock rotating as scorers. Umpire rules include fines and pregame duty, while roster limits specify 17 players per club with rookies prioritized.
Mrs. Miles died in an El Paso hospital after a long illness. She moved to Alpine in 1928 with her parents. She is survived by her husband, children Jerry and Gene, her parents Mr. and Mrs. C C Chil dress of Odessa, three sisters and two brothers. Funeral held 10:30 am Saturday at Livingston Funeral Home with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. She was a Methodist Church member. Rev R R Reed led the service.
Bake Turner, Texas Tech freshman from Alpine, emerged high point man at the Abilene Christian College track meet. His freshman team placed first with Turner scoring 10 points, contributing to Tech's 63 total while ACC had 40 and TCU 19. Turner won high jump, placed second in broad jump at 22 ft 9 in, and finished fourth in both 220 yd low hurdles and 120 yd high hurdles.
Alpine plans opening day at Kokernot Field to win the Sophomore League attendance trophy as the Alpine Cowboys host the San Angelo Pirates. Mayor Jesus Robana of Ojinaga and ex-governor S S Capitanachi attend. half holiday proclaimed. Tickets in demand. bargain books on sale with 15 general admissions for 10.
Alpine officials postponed the water system improvement bond election from May 2 to May 9 after bond firm lawyers advised a written resolution was not present at the April 9 vote. City records show the rescheduling occurred at a 1 p.m. April 18 meeting with Mayor Lockhart and Commissioners Burgess and Hillger present. Absentee voting runs April 24 through May 5 at the City Office.
Mrs. Mary A. Nixon died at 1 45 am Thursday April 16 in Alpine after moving there in 1910 with a long residence plus eight years in New Mexico. Born 1875 in Greenfield Missouri she was a Methodist. Survived by son Robert Nixon Lubbock grandchildren Joe Douglas McColpin Washington DC Eddy Nixon with the 6th Fleet Mary Harri son Lubbock and two great grandchildren plus nieces and nephews in Missouri Oregon and Washington. Services were at 3 pm Friday April 17 at Livingston Funeral Home with Rev. R R Reed presiding. Pallbearers included George Buddy Brown J C Walker James Crawford Paul Weyerts Bob Crawford and Jimmy Eichholtz.
Cross & Cross joins Gay Gibson Thunderbird Contest as Mrs Jack Cross announces entries earned by buying Gay Gibson dresses in junior sizes. Local winner gets dress and a chance at a Ford Thunderbird in the national contest. entry must include a Why I Like the Gay Gibson Dress note. Contest closes Saturday May 23.
Principal James L Crawford reports Alpine High School baccalaureate services will be at 8 pm Sunday May 17 honoring local ministers under a 10 year policy. Rev R E Streetman will give the invocation Rev Melvin Bryan the benediction Rev Richard P Lynch the principal address Carlene Hegelund likely to provide music.
D. C. Littleton, West Texas Utilities Co. manager in Lubbock, attended the funeral of W. H. Thornburg, 69, plant chief engineer for WTA at Marfa. Thornburg died in Brewster County Memorial Hospital last Saturday. Funeral services were held in Marfa's Methodist Church Sunday, with burial in Uvalde.
The City Commission voted to lay four blocks of 6 inch cement asbestos water main with valves and two fire plugs on Avenue 6 starting at 8th Street and three blocks of 6 inch sewer pipe on Berkeley Street from Murphy Street to the south. The motion was by Commissioner Burgess, seconded by Commissioner Hiller.
American Legion Big Bend Post 79 hosts a get acquainted evening at 6 30 p m Saturday April 25. The program features manager Eddie Popowak coach Fred Maguire and players with remarks. A fried chicken dinner is available for $1 for adults. children priced to be determined. Visitors may attend program free. Dance to follow dinner.
The Alpine Cowboys welcomed manager Eddie Popowski and 15 sophomores after landing from Ocala to Marfa Alpine. Fans lined the runway as the Convair from Los Angeles touched down at 4 50 pm instead of the scheduled 3 30 pm. The team, staying at the Holland House Hotel, will hold practices at Kokermorefield ahead of the March 5 opener with the San Angelo Pirates.
The board approved a special schedule for opening day at Kokernot Field. School starts at 8 am and ends at 1 pm with a Ranch dismissal at 11:86 am and a 12:30 pm afternoon session. The game begins at 2:30 pm and TEA requirements are met.
