A barbecue at Koker Net Lodge last Saturday gathered about 60 Al pine Scouters and finance campaign workers. Fred Griffin chaired the event and Scouts from Troops 41 and 44 helped serve. This weekend Alpine troops begin the Spring Camp O-Bees in the Big Bend region.
In the Big Bend region donors pledged funds totaling $00 to guarantee a Westminster chair on the Big Bend Series lineup for next fall, ensuring continued support for the program.
Frances DeMond, mezzo-soprano, headlined the first Big Bend Municipal Concert season finale last Thursday, drawing an appreciative West Texas audience. Her performance featured a moving religious selections group and three encores, despite breathing challenges at altitude. Concertgoers look forward to next season’s planned program.
Joe W. Luckett a senior petroleum engineer at Texas Tech serves as publicity manager for the 16th annual Engineers Show on the Tech campus today and tomorrow. He belongs to Tau Beta Pi Sigma Gamma Epsilon Kappa Mu Epsilon and the Society of Petroleum Engineers and Geologists. A war veteran he has the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. Mrs. Lackett is the former Miss Jackie Cross daughter of Mr and Mrs Jack Cross Alpine.
A list of residents and guests recounts A. R. Stambaugh visiting here with friends in Hamilton. Numerous visits to San Angelo San Antonio Dallas Houston Fort Worth and Hot Springs New Mexico are noted along with family arrivals and departures.
A Brewster County Tuberculosis association will organize in the county court room on May 4 with a state representative to assist. The AAUW leads local efforts inviting all citizens and groups to attend, elect officers and a board, and begin preventive education about TB. No fund raising is planned beyond the usual Christmas seal sale.
We express gratitude to the Alpine and Marfa fire departments and others who assisted in fighting the grass fire on the Gage ranch Sunday April 11. Gage Ranches remember their aid and cooperation.
Promote a municipal concert membership by May 15 to hear the Westminster choir and the Dellas Symphony. Members gain access to performances and early seating.
Strong demand lifted cattle calves hogs and sheep on a week to week basis with higher prices across most classes. Slaughter cattle and calves ranged 16 to 30.50 per hundredweight with fat cows 17.50 to 23 and calves 25 to 29.50 while spring lambs reached 22 to 24 and stocker animals 18 to 29. A note warns no municipal concert pledges after May 15 and urges action.
Chadron dentist L R Bower attended as a visiting Rotarian with Humberto Lomonaco and guests from the chamber of commerce. Eddie Burling is introduced as the new student Rotarian. First Annual Band Day at Sul Ross set for May 1 with eight bands. parade through Alpine precedes events at Jackson Field. J B Speer spoke on International Understanding and undeveloped resources and cited three institutions including Rotary as key for world culture and closer human association.
