Funeral Rites for B. E. Hinson Recap Alpine Ties

Funeral services held Sunday for B. E. Elbert Hinson age 73 former Alpine resident who died in Alamogordo New Mexico last Thursday. He came to Fort Davis as a youth and lived in Alpine for years leaving about 20 years ago. A carpenter by trade he built the house now at N Fifth Street opposite Central Ward School where the Garner family lived. Mrs. Hinson former Miss Frances A. Jones died last July and was buried here. Services were at Livingston Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Fred S. Rogers officiating. Interment in Elm Grove cemetery. Survivors include brothers W. F. Polk of Study Butte Brewster County and Joe Hinson of Sanderson.

Mason resigns as Alpine CC manager in surprise move

Frank C. Mason, Alpine chamber of commerce manager since July 15, resigns effective April 15. Directors named D. L. Cross Jr. as successor and Mrs. Preston Stedman as secretary. Mason and his wife say the new job in Bossier City is a promotion they could not decline.

Bryant Sells WB Oil Interest and Plans Move to San Angelo

C A Bryant has sold his interest in WB Oil Co to partner J R Rucker and will move to San Angelo to manage an apartment house he has purchased. He expects to depart soon with his family joining after school ends. The Bryants have resided here for about two years.

Alpine Big Bend park highway extends ten miles

The State Highway Commission approved the second ten mile section at Austin and allotted 50000 for construction. The first five miles are completed and topped, with the remaining five miles to be topped soon as warm weather allows within about 60 days. Deeds for the full right of way have been signed and turned over to George J Kempen, who is the resident highway engineer. The right of way was donated by neighboring ranch owners.

FFA Style Show at Granada Next Tuesday Night

Future Farmers of Alpine present a Granada theatre style show on Tuesday night featuring looks and recreations of Carmen Miranda Veronica Lake and other movie icons. Judges pick top winners who receive theater passes and notices go to FFA members selling most tickets. Proceeds benefit FFA activities with many members expected to participate and tickets on sale now.

The Alpine Music club presents the Sul Ross symphony orchestra directed by Preston Stedman. The program features Sul Ross students Howard Stafford and Ralph Paul ey with George Kelver as soloist at Sul Ross auditorium, Sunday at 3 oclock. Public invited.

First Trans-Texas Flight Tentatively Set for Apr 19

The Trans-Texas Airways first Fort Stockton to Marfa Alpine field service was tentatively scheduled for April 15 with a test flight planned in the days ahead. A big reception is planned at the air field with residents of Alpine Marfa and nearby towns to participate.

Cross and Coleman Re-elected as Trustees in Alpine ISD

D. L. Cross Sr. and J. C. Coleman were re-elected trustees of Alpine Independent School District without opposition in the election held last Saturday with 130 votes cast. Mondy L L Martin superintendent of Crane schools will be guest speaker at the banquet of the newly organized Junior Chamber of Commerce Monday night. J W Gillett elected Alpine mayor will give the welcome. Fort Stockton Jaycees sponsored the group and will be well represented.

J C Penney Reopens At Original Alpine Site

J C Penney reopens at its original corner of Holland avenue and North Fifth street after a total rebuild doubling size. Manager C M Corkran says the store now offers 3 000 square feet on the main floor plus a 1 500 square foot balcony with new lighting cooling and headers aiding department visibility. The main floor features furnishings clothing and home goods while the balcony houses a ready to wear fashion center for women and girls including dresses suits coats and millinery.

Sul Ross Seeks Bids for Gym Additions and Cottages

Sul Ross college invites bids on gym additions a student union building and 30 cottages with bids opening in Austin on April 26 at 10 am. The gymnasium built twenty years ago will gain end wing extensions while the officers club at the airfield will be moved remodeled and converted into a student union building. The 30 cottages will be tile finished and placed between the current cottages and the highway. A new swimming pool has just been completed and will be ready for use this summer.

Mayor L B Starns proclaims April as Cancer Control Month in Alpine Texas urging citizens and organizations to support the American Cancer Society Texas Division. The proclamation notes cancer death reduction through early detection and treatment and requests communal support for cancer research education and service programs.

Alpine invites President Truman to May rodeo

The Alpine chamber of commerce plans to invite President Truman in person to the second annual Alpine rodeo set for May 14 15 16 with complimentary tickets. Hear Choir Sing by Westminster Chorus Visitors

Fifteen members of the high school chorus with director Bill Carrico and Mr and Mrs W C Friesen traveled to El Paso Monday to hear the Westminster choir perform that night. The group returned home early Tuesday morning. Both Mr and Mrs Friesen are former Westminster choir members.

Alpine Census Counts 118 Scholastic Children

Alpine reports 118 counted in scholastic census with 1185 school age children as of March 31. Superintendent Peyton Cain notes state apportionment of 55 per child, but it covers only 40 percent of district needs. A supplemental census period will classify new arrivals ages six to seventeen for 1948.

Gillett Elected Mayor In City Election

Tuesday election in the city cast 832 votes with M A Webb receiving 310 and J W Gillett 513 for mayor. Commissioners named were F L McCollum 475 and Jack Cross 473, defeating rivals W B Dorris Sr Gordon Barrow Sam D Thomas H G Allman.
