Diamond Begins Ore Processing in Brewster County

Diamond Alkali Co has started mining mercury in the Terlingua district of southern Brewster County Texas. Ore is being processed in leased facilities with core drilling indicating mercury in commercial quantities and ongoing exploration to assess deposit size and future operations. The venture began early in 1967 and supports Diamond’s chlorine and caustic soda production.

Alpine U.S. 90 route review halted by Texas Highway Commission

Texas Highway Commission decided no action on U S Highway 90 through Alpine for now. A March 31 letter to County Judge Felix McGaughy says Alpine bypass proposal should be dropped from consideration, while promising modest improvements to the existing street next year. The note thanks local delegation led by State Rep. Gene Hendryx for their presentation at the Austin hearing.

Lobos Sweep Pershing in Four-Game Set at Home

Sul Ross Lobos defeated Pershing College 4-3 in the first game and 1-1 in the second of a Monday doubleheader, then won 4-3 again on Tuesday. A Wednesday afternoon final game result was unavailable at press time.

Faulk Memorial Loan Fund Created at Sul Ross College

A loan fund is established at Sul Ross State College in memory of J. M. Faulk who died in Houston on March 7. Donations should be sent to the Sul Ross State College Business Office in care of the J. M. Faulk Memorial Loan Fund. The Lobos will meet Emporia State College on October 7 in Emporia Kansas.

Alpine Mayor Dr. Lockhart Resigns Amid Local Change

The article notes Dr. Lockhart resigning as mayor of Alpine. Sul Ross State College Choir directed by Ross Hise will give a spring concert Thursday at 8 15 in the Main Auditorium with no admission. Chamber Singers tour April 15 18 and perform Thursday plus full choir pieces and titles across classical works. Carol Miller is the piano accompanist for the choirs.

Miss Big Bend Country Pageant Planned In Alpine

Alpine JC sponsors Miss Big Bend Country beauty contest May 6 at Sul Ross College Main Auditorium. Contestants enter to compete in Miss West Texas in July and Miss Texas in Fort Worth. Entry fee 25 dollars. deadline April 25.

Episcopal Bishop to Visit Alpine on April 11

The Right Rev. Charles J. Kinsolving III, Bishop of New Mexico and Southwest Texas, will make an annual visitation and confirm parishioners in Alpine on Tuesday April 11. The service begins at 7 30 p m at St James Episcopal Church followed by a reception at the vicarage.

Crerar Rites Held for 85 Year Old Alpine Resident

George C. Crerar 85 died Thursday in Brewster County Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Clanton Newbill officiating. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery directed by Geeslin Funeral Home. Pallbearers listed. organist Glenn Davis. Born Sept 20 1881 in Kirkintilloch Scotland, Crerar came to the U S in 1907 settling in Cleveland. He married Margaret in Cleveland in 1912 and worked in foundry business and as an Ohio highway inspector. He retired in 1947 and moved to Alpine. He was an elder of the tenian Church and a member of Alpine Masonic Lodge No 766. Survived by wife, one daughter Mrs Oliver Theophra ug ht er, and Mrs Oliver Thee. sister Y Crerar of Toronto. grandchildren Peasy AM Karvonen, Buddy Theophilus, George Karvonen, and two great grandchildren.
