Democrats Nominate McLean for Ohio Governor
In Zanesville on August 31 the Ohio Democrats nominated Cincinnati journalist John R. McLean for governor on the first ballot. Other nominees included A. W. Patrick for lieutenant governor and Dewitt C. Badger for supreme judge. The platform reaffirms free silver, maintains naval strength, opposes a large standing army, supports independence for Cuba and the Philippines, fights trusts, and supports direct election of president, vice president, and senator. McLean, born September 17, 1848, rose from Harvard to ownership of the Cincinnati Enquirer and national Democratic activity, but had never held public office prior to this nomination.

Ex-Gov Samuel Merrill of Iowa died at his Los Angeles home at age 73 after a long illness. Born 1822 in Turnek Mes Alle he moved with his family to Buxton then taught a school. He served in New Hampshire and Iowa politics including two terms as governor and led the Twentyfirst Iowa Volunteer Infantry before being wounded at Black River Bridge.
