Passengers and crew sustained severe burns and injuries as the burning vessel sank after rescue attempts failed. Captain Christie was respected locally for risking himself to save his mother and others.
New York Oct 24 The World reports a railway alliance between the Chicago & Northwestern and the Union Pacific, promising coordinated traffic and mutual benefit. The Vanderbilts control the C&NW, with about 4 300 miles, and Union Pacific about 6 300 miles, suggesting extended routes toward the Pacific and possibly a through line ocean to ocean.
The Wheat Growers of the Mississippi Valley opened the gathering in Central Turner Hall at 2 pm. The Farmers' Federation organized the event to seek better prices for wheat and to discuss reestablishing a uniform sale price. Norman J. Columan presides, Walter N. Allen is vice president, and I A Wilson of Minnesota serves as secretary, with two delegates finishing credentials.

In Baltimore on October 25 at 2716 East Hager Street a benzine tipped wash tub exploded. Mrs. Bailey regularly added benzine to wash water for savings. Her husband William Bailey prepared the tub with hot water, then poured in benzine causing a blast that wrecked the back wall and side walls, leaving Hailey severely scalded and unconscious.
Rear Admiral Gillis, commander of the South Atlantic Squadron, reports yellow fever spreading in Brazil including Rio de Janeiro. He notes an unusually sickly season that begins before warm weather. He urges that no visiting vessels be allowed at infected ports unless essential.
Frank F. Davis testifies that defendant Cullom confessed to forgery on August 6 in the presence of three witnesses. Mrs. Davis reports Cullom repeated the confession several times and discussed the crime freely, producing a strong impression on all observers.
