A great flood from the Floyd river inundates Sioux City and surrounding districts. About 8,000 people are driven from homes as water rises rapidly, drowning several, wrecking stock yards and railroad property, and suspending all business. Rescue efforts use boats from Sioux river stations and existing public soup and relief drives begin.
May 21 reports from Little Rock and Redfield describe the Arkansas river flooding surpassing the 1844 rise. North Little Rock sees bank collapses and damage to mills and buildings. five drowned near the shore with bodies unrecovered. Redfield notes 25 to 30 drowned in the last twelve hours. Across the Kaskaskia, New Athens and surrounding hamlets are submerged, prompting relief meetings for St. Clair county victims.
May 26 Sioux City Iowa reports a vast flood disaster with about fifty drowned and around a hundred unaccounted for. Whole blocks flooded to second stories, homes swept away, debris scattered, and extensive city damage. Rail lines damaged. extensive rebuilding planned with employment for locals.
May 19 Lincoln Nebraska reports severe flooding. Nine people drowned as roads washed out for miles and rail service halted. Rock Island eastbound train from Denver stranded east of Lincoln, surrounded by floodwaters. Residents left homeless, townspeople describe the scene as terrible.
Meager details reach St Louis from a collision near Crooked Bayou Ark between a passenger train and a freight train on the Cotton Belt. The wreck occurred around dusk when the passenger cars were thrown from the track. Early reports claim seven killed and more than a dozen seriously injured, with stormy conditions delaying communications.
