A cyclone struck Sherman Texas just before 5 pm damaging western Sherman and killing many. Initial tallies estimate up to sixty dead with at least one hundred injured as teams search debris and nearby areas for additional victims.
A cyclone struck Hower Texas on May 16 leaving eight dead and many injured. The storm path was a quarter of a mile wide wrecking ten farmhouses and numerous barns. Gribble Springs suffered deaths and injuries, and Keller north of Justin was nearly wiped out with only one house standing.
A powerful cyclone swept from southwest to northeast across Seneca Kansas and nearby towns. At least four died in Seneca with many injured and extensive property destruction. The Grand Opera House, courthouse, schools, churches, and numerous homes were destroyed or damaged. Baileyville and Frankfort also reported fatalities and injuries, with Sabetha’s northern area hit and the Grand Island depot demolished.
A tornado passed over the northwest corner of this county damaging many structures. In Elva the house of Anderson Jones was torn down and the entire Jones family of five was killed. The storm moved from Graves county via Simpsonia, demolishing two stores two churches and a schoolhouse along with stables fences and more.
Washington May 18 The morning session of the American Protective Association Supreme Council reviewed the advisory board action blacklisting President McKinley as a presidential candidate. The board found the witnesses unreliable and incorrect, deciding McKinley should be treated the same as other presidential nominees and not discriminated against.
Des Moines May 14 Temporary Chairman J A Harvey denounced the Republican party as disloyal to the people and said church voters for Republican nominees are pious frauds He blamed the party for the nation s finances and claimed capitalists influenced the Supreme Court to strike down the income tax Delegates to the national convention were chosen and the 1805 platform reaffirmed
In Sr Josrin Missouri on May 15 the Filley faction gained control of the Republican party after a lengthy dispute. Kerens supporters occupied the opera house delaying proceedings until Filley agreed to compromise. Major Barthold named temporary chairman and the Filley faction guided the convention, endorsing protection reciprocity and McKinley.
At the Colorado Republican state convention near 1:30 a.m. delegates at large to the St Louis gathering were Henry M Teller Frank H Gondy J W Rockefellow and James W Dening instructed by resolution to act in harmony with Henry M Tell ers views. In Delaware Dover May 13 the Republican state convention met amid a split between Addicks and Higgins factions with Higgins men bolting to name a McKinley delegation while the Addicks delegation remained uninstructed.
In Washington May 18 the impression grows that silver advocates in both parties in Congress will oppose final adjournment before the national conventions. There is no formal agreement yet but leaders discuss postponing adjournment to see how conventions position the financial issue.
Elliott's bronze equestrian statue of General Winfield Scott Hancock was unveiled in Washington with ceremonies and praised as a superb likeness. Other items note protests against Morgan's senate speech, a telegraphy triumph sending a message to London and back, and Armenians seeking to locate a large Armenian colony in the American South.

Owners must deliver or transport to nearest detachments where troops are stationed. Collecting centers may purchase at market price or hold deposits. Any corn not deposited or purchased becomes contraband of war and owners face criminal penalties.
Hundreds of men fought forest fires in Davis W V for 40 hours with losses estimated over 500000. The Middle Fork track is wiped out and the adjoining forest burns, threatening entire county unless rain arrives. No lum bermen or citizens known to be caught.
