Noah Porter D D L L P ex president of Yale college died at his residence in New Haven March 4. Born December 14 in Connecticut he graduated from Yale in 18. He served as tutor at Yale, lived in New Milford and Springfield until 1843, then became professor of moral philosophy at Yale in 1886 and succeeded Dr Woolsey as president. He authored numerous education and philosophical works including the principal editor of Webster's revised dictionary. A leading American metaphysician, he was highly regarded as a scholar.
Seven Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul workmen died in a Milwaukee yards wreck when a Watertown accommodation derailed after an open switch. The Merrill train, running parallel, toppled cars while passengers escaped with a violent shaking. One hundred workers were aboard the overturned cars, thirteen injured, seven killed instantly.
Washington March 4 The sub committee of the committees on public lands has drafted a bill to cede all public lands excluding military and Indian reservations to the states where they are located. The measure far surpasses the prior arid lands plan, promising heated discussion and likely delay. The will goes to the full committee Friday and to the house next Monday.
Hon. John W. Kendall, representative in Congress of Kentucky's Tenth District, died in Washington at 25 p.m. after suffering two strokes of apoplexy earlier in the day. He retired in good condition, awoke ill, and fell unconscious, with the second stroke occurring about two hours later. Funeral arrangements were not yet made.
