Washington dispatch describes ex Congressmen Taulbee of Kentucky shot in the head during a corridor confrontation with Charles Kincaid of the Louisville Times. The quarrel stems from a year and a half old dispute over tainted coverage, Kincaid’s nose was reportedly touched, and Taulbee was taken to Providence Hospital in serious condition but showed signs of recovery.
In Ithaca Michigan a Friday morning collision between freight trains on the Toledo and Ann Arbor line killed conductor J Enright and fireman William Farrell of Owosso. Engineer Reading was fatally injured and two crewmen were badly hurt. One engine and twelve cars were wrecked.
A daring outlaw named Robert Robinson robbed Gophart & Co. bank in Valley Falls and fled to Meriden where he was killed by local police after drawing revolvers. Officials recovered about 2,750 dollars, including 500 from the morning spree, with notes and a notebook linking him to S. R. Shaw. The incident ends with officers exonerated and the killer earning a possible 200 dollar reward.
Washington reports the International American conference is set to adjourn in April. Most committees have issued reports and many adopted. A monetary convention panel backs a common silver dollar and US bullion certificate plan. Other committees on railway, sanitary rules, weights and measures, patents and trade marks, and international law have also reported or been scheduled for action.
The Walposs swept Doramilley and Walnut Grove Dam in Puawix Arizona Territory on March 3. The safe with 10000 dollars vanished as floodwaters carried it six miles. a steel boiler from the lower dam was found thirty miles away. Seymour town is wiped out with no standing structures. Gold nuggets and debris line thirty-five miles of canyon as rescuers search for the dead and shelter the living. Authorities say the dam will not be rebuilt.
Paris March 3 M Constans minister of the interior resigns after a personal clash with Prime Minister Tirard. Deputy Bourgeois to replace Constans, while Tirard’s own resignation is refused by President Carnot. Press says cabinet weakens and may fall. Bourgeois is an advanced radical with policy stipulations.
A British steamer bound from Australian ports to London foundered near Somerset in Torres Strait after hitting an unseen rock. The ship, 2254 tons, carried about 280 aboard with 116 saved including the captain and officers. reports vary on fatalities.
Ex governor James Edward English dies at 78 in New Haven after a severe cold developed into pneumonia. He left a widow and one son and had a long career including terms in Congress and as Connecticut governor. He also held U.S. Senate appointment and chaired several banks and manufacturing firms.
Martin O Malley and Peter Fuley burned to death in a Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania house fire Saturday night. O Malley, a laborer, lived in a small shanty near the railroad. The fire broke out during a drunken spree when one man apparently re-ignited a stove or lamp, engulfing the building and its occupants.
