J W Harris superintendent of the Soldiers and Sailors' orphans' home at Knightstown Ind killed himself at the St Charles hotel in New Orleans by cutting his throat with a pocketknife. He arrived from St Louis that morning and appeared unsettled. He wrote a note to his wife then tore it up before ending his life. Found locked in his room with 62 50 in cash a gold watch and postal cards. The letter was addressed to Mrs M D Harris Knightstown Ind care of the orphans' home.
Another member of the jury fixing ring has been found guilty by twelve jurors. Thomas P. Mes Crystal faced charges for offering juror Thomas J. McCabe $500 to secure a mistrial or acquittal in the panel drawn February 21 for the trial of the assassins of Police Chief Hennessy. Indicted with D. G O'Malley as an accessory before the fact.
Suspended from duty amid an inquiry into ties to the Keystone bank failure in Philadelphia. President Harrison directs a cautious approach, referring the matter to the comptroller with safeguards for creditors and public justice, while denying rumors about Comptroller Lacey and surrounding officials.
Kingston Ont June 12. Sir John Macdonalds remains are interred at Cataraqui cemetery amid almost royal honors. A vast crowd, national flags at half mast, and a parade of civic, military, and diplomatic contingents accompanied the cortege from Ontario street to the grave. The burial was conducted with Masonic honors.
In Edgar County two farmers Thomas Benson and Elmer Farris clashed after remarks about Farris wife. Benson was struck with a club by Farris, who then stabbed Benson to death in a barn at dawn. Farris not yet arrested.
Herbert Simmons, wanted for robbing the Northern Pacific express near Salem, NC last August, escaped while being transported from St. Cloud to Fargo. He leapt from the rear car as the train ran at full speed and struck a sand embankment, then disappeared into the woods. Simmons, of Wheeling, West Virginia, is described as a notorious criminal.
In London, Sir Edward Clarke, the solicitor general, stunned the court by indicating the Prince of Wales could face removal from the army list if a verdict against William Gordon-Cumming stood. The prince sat unmoved beside the lord chief justice as fresh drama unfolded during the Tranby Croft case with Sir William’s future in the balance.
