A jumble of incidents reports drownings in Pewaukee and Detroit areas, fires destroying Camp Douglas Wisconsin and Chicago swindles totaling hundreds of thousands, earthquakes felt in Connecticut, a Kansas City dynamite event, heat waves killing in New York, and widespread political and criminal cases across states with deaths, bank robberies, and railroad accidents.
In the seven days ending the 14th US business failures reached 227, down from 231 the prior week and 107 a year earlier. A Huntington West Virginia gas explosion killed John Hayless and Timothy Cooney. Election returns show Honk 15,2 and Woodrutt 6,087 with Houk winning by 9,028. Campo California village destroyed by a cloudburst with no deaths. Josef How, long-serving congressman, died in San Francisco at 80. Joan Coyle of Winston County Alabama tortured during a burglary seeking $600. In Nashville, Indiana, two daughters of B. King were gravely injured in a runaway. In Columbia, South Carolina, David Jacobs and Miss Mary Johnson were to be hanged when governor granted a respite.
Mrs. Sara Childress Polk, widow of James K. Polk, died quietly at the Polk mansion in Nashville after a long illness. Born September 4, 1803 in Murfreesboro, she influenced Washington society as First Lady, improved presidential entertaining, and maintained the Polk legacy amid changing fortunes. The will reportedly left the estate to the most deserving Polk, with arbitration pending as to its execution.
A Colima telegram reports ashes ceased to fall while a 5 to 6 inch ash layer covered houses and streets. Lava streams several feet wide flow down the slopes burning everything in their path. The eruption is described as unprecedented in scale and a government commission is to study it.
