Peace talks stalled as US demands rebuffed in China crisis
Washington sources report Secretary Adee delivered a US reply to Wu, reiterating previous China demands for legation protection, free communications, and restored order. The administration signals no negotiations until compliance is assured, while European powers press for a firm stance amid foreign troop tensions. Wu presented Li Hung Chang’s appeal, but Washington declines to intervene against British troop landings at Shanghai. The note underscores that any settlement hinges on China meeting terms and that China’s calls for allied mediation will not override US policy. The dispatch highlights the risk of further foreign military action if demands are not met. The piece also notes other brief items: Lord Russell’s death in London. Towne declines VP nomination. a tragedy in Preston and a fatal shooting in Dingionally.

Democrats Hopeful in Iowa Campaign Kickoff
Des Moines reports the Democratic state central committee gearing up for a lively campaign. Organizers solicit small contributions, forming local clubs to fund efforts in First Second and Sixth districts. Leaders predict gains in the Second and First, with Lacey fighting hard in the Sixth and Hedge in the First. Gear's death looms as a demoralizing factor for Bryanites, while Republicans rely on solid majorities and German votes to counter. The party seeks thorough organization nationwide to challenge the current Republican majority in the House.
