Bold Matabele Attack Near Bulawayo Endangers Communication

Saturday’s fighting near Bulawayo saw Matabele forces surround the town from north and west with an 8,000 strong force assaulting a 300-man white Cape and native column. The Bulawayo defenders, aided by rapid fire guns, repulsed the attack with three whites killed and several wounded, while the Matabele casualties were heavy with an observer noting 140 dead nearby. Edna Varney aged 16 and Emma Cunningham aged 165 years died by drowning in the mill pond at Downsville nine miles north of Menomonie Wisconsin. They were last seen Tuesday evening. A brown bottle of laudanum was found on the bank along with a watch. Letters pointing to the motive for the act are disclosed, involving prominent local parties.
