In Milwaukee on March 26 two members of John Runke's family died from trichina poisoning after eating pork sausage. A 6 year old died on the 17th and a 2 year old on the 21st, with others ill. Investigation traced illness to contaminated pork sausage and parasite infection. Mrs Runke and a 3 year old were dying. Pork inspection moves toward stricter export rules, with microscopic meat checks announced by Secretary Rusk. Four men killed in a salt mine shaft accident at Lyons Reel Salt Co. in Lyons, Kansas, when a lifting bucket descended 500 feet. two victims died with fatal head injuries, others badly mangled.
Devon Indiana March 27 Abner L Bowen dies leaving a 5 million fortune mainly in personal property. County taxes face forthe estate as heirs pack up notes mortgages bonds and stocks and flee by train to Urbana Chicago and Philadelphia while Nathaniel Bowen stays on real estate. Estimates place moved property around 2 million as heirs seek to dodge new tax listings and possible US court suits. The Indiana Bank run by the family fears a torrent of withdrawals as word spreads.
Kansas City dispatch reports Wallace County seeks relief for starving and freezing farmers after a fourth consecutive crop failure in western Kansas. A relief committee from Wallace County arrived to raise funds locally, but only twenty dollars could be secured from about 200 attendees. One member mortgaged a horse to cover the delegation's expenses as 2,400 residents rely on fires of buffalo and cow chips for meals.
Solomon Neidener returned from a public sale to his home twelve miles east of Mitchell and found his wife dead from two gunshot wounds. The coroner's jury investigates as neighbors say the marriage had been happy. Mrs. Neidener, 24, known for her looks, left no children.
Captain W D Dowell treasurer of the Mariners Alliance of Arkansas was duped of 4000 by three men. He loaned money to cover a game with a stranger who drew a pistol and fled. The other two suspects named Dr Howard and Judge Baker of Springfield Missouri were captured.
Gen James A Ekin of the United States Army died at his home in Louisville Kentucky on March 27 He was born in Pittsburgh in 181 He entered the army as lieutenant colonel of the 100th Pennsylvania volunteers and served on the commission that tried Mrs Surratt He took a prominent part in Lincoln’s funeral and long served as quartermaster of the government at Jeffersonville Indiana.
