Paris bombed, Paris government moves to Bordeaux as front lines shift. British and French reports sparse, but claims include German victories and Allied counter efforts. Several islands and towns change hands. Samoa falls to Britain.
Secretary Daniels says the U S fleet will stay in Mexican waters indefinitely. Two more refugee ships arrive in New York carrying 1 073 passengers. Passage on the Principessa Matilda costs 7000 for a cabin de luxe chartered by John H K Jones U S consul at Genoa. Rescue crews save 200 aboard the City of Chicago after a Lake Michigan fire. G A R veterans in Detroit parade are reduced to fewer than 200 veterans remaining in line as marching ends.
The Vatican in Rome named Cardinal Giacomo Della Chiesa archbishop of Bologna as Pope Benedict XV after Pope Pius X died August 20. Nine ballots occurred with Gibbons and O Connell late. Farley arrived earlier. Della Chiesa born November 21 1854 in PeGu. He was created cardinal May 25 1914 and ordained December 21 1878.
