New York Oct 26 Sage denies reports he leads an opposition pool to buy the Union Pacific railroad. He says he has not been invited to form a syndicate by President McKinley. Gen Samuel Thomas denies responsibility for the story but says a syndicate is contemplated and he has pledged up to 10 million dollars. Universalist conventions in Chicago adjourn after a quiet session condemning capital punishment and proposing denominational school support and a one cent daily mission revenue plan.
Toronto Ont Oct 26 AU arrangements preflow complete for the Worlds Woman's Christian Temperance Union convention. Banquet for delegates led by Miss Frances Willard with 100 trained young ladies as waiters. Executive committee met to handle business since last meeting two years ago and plan convention actions. Letters from Ceylon Burma and Chile requested missionaries. Burmah would cover half the expense, Chile has no money but wants a missionary, Ceylon would support if costs borne by the union. General officers to be elected at end, executive urged immediate pursuit of vacancies in auxiliary countries and officers to fill them as needed.

The state association needs sixteen thousand dollars for running expenses, with pledges totaling three thousand from individuals and associations. Delegates at Indianapolis framed joint sessions of the Christian and Friends churches, discussing centralized governance and a revised discipline.
Dakota official Dakota Offuly faces embezzlement complaints alleging misuse of public funds. Civil suits target ex-State Auditor Mayhew, ex-Auditor Hipple, and Insurance Clerk Anderson for large fee collections with no accounting. Detroit, Mich., Feb. 28. A boiler explosion at a factory on Hancock avenue and Rinpelle street, in the northwestern city, caused fatalities and injuries. At least five men were fatally hurt, with one dying later, and ten more seriously injured. The blast wrecked the four story brick building. surrounding structures suffered broken windows as the northeast part of the city shook, though no fire occurred. The other workers escaped unharmed.
