Grun dy Center Iowa Sept 60 W H Slifer acquitted by jury after five hours deliberation in a district court case charging him with poisoning his wife. Defense hinged on wife’s own death by suicide and a letter she wrote to him detailing intent. Prosecution effort to prove forgery failed and the community celebrated the verdict with a large reception for Slifer.
L A Swearingen a prominent butcher in Oskaloosa was shot four times as he entered his home. Doctors treated head wounds, skull not fractured. Robbery suspected. pursuit of a mysterious attacker to be continued.
Dr M McCash state superintendent of the Town Anti-Saloon league and B P Parker saloon magnate of Des Moines will meet in joint debate at the Auditorium on November 1. Parker accepts after McCash challenged him, aiming to draw a larger crowd than vaudeville and to test Parker before audiences as he considers his mayoral campaign.
Anamosa Oct 1 James and a 17 year old near Iron Hill clashed over a horse and harness. James shot his brother Frank in the chest, the slug lodged near the back. The younger brother says self defense and was held on $500 bond awaiting grand jury. The wounded man married two weeks ago and forgave him before authorities. A passerby was rough handled during the confrontation. Found Dead by Roadside Prominent Farmer Near Fonda Dies After Fall from Wagon. Edward Lilly, 63, a well known farmer, was riding for wood when the team returned alone and his body was found with a broken neck. He leaves a family of grown children.
Waterloo reports the Dry Run sewer, a 3400 foot concrete structure 12 by 12 feet inside, finished after over two years of work. Contractor William Horrabin of Tawa City informed city council, with City Engineer T Wilson confirming completion and the contract total of 78015.08 dollars.
Des Moines police arrested John Lewis once a prominent Osceola bank cashier and Mrs A F Oldham at 3 30 am for adultery in a Victoria Des Moines apartment. Lewis, who paid $1000 in bank certificates for his appearance, appeared shaken as Mrs Oldham pleaded not to be jailed. The husband of Oldham, a Chicago Milwaukee St Paul railroad brakeman, signed the charge.
The nineteenth annual Iowa Christian Endeavor Union session will be held in Shenandoah October 7 to 9. The event gathers about 1,000 societies and 50,000 members from twelve districts with leaders and officers. Noted speakers include Francis E. Clark, Kate Haus, Chaplain Peckworth, L. G. Kent, A. E. Kepfard, Dan Bradley and others. New York on October 3 Simon P. Gillis the city’s junior amateur hammer throwing champion was practicing on a vacant lot when his hammer of sixteen pounds flew farther than planned striking 14 year old Christian Koehler who climbed the fence for a ball. Koehler died instantly.
Mrs. Mary Landis formerly married to the Philadelphia and Reading railroad executive secretary died after falling from the third story of her home in Philadelphia on October 3. The union occurred three weeks prior and their honeymoon had just ended.
The funeral of Professor Niels Finsen, discoverer of the Finsen rays of night, was held at Frederica church in Copenhagen. Two kings attended the ceremony, those of Denmark and Greece, honoring the renowned scientist.
