Iowa Capitol Extension Cost Far Below Estimate

Final figures show Iowa paid about $1,125,000 for 247 lots in the capitol extension, about $75,000 under the original $1.2 million estimate. Two remaining properties will be bought later. Salvage and rents turned into the treasury by T. E. McCurdy total around $80,000 and may reach $100,000.

Increases in Iowa state institutions and inmates rise

Des Moines reports show a twelve month inmate gain of 298 across fourteen state institutions under the state board of control. On November 1, 1914 there were 9,788 inmates. by November 1, 1915 the total reached 10,086. Anamosa holds 742 convicts, Fort Madison 645 inmates, with the total convict rise at 127. Insane patients in state hospitals increased from 4,623 to 4,658, despite earlier county withdrawals. Seventeen institutions are under control, with fourteen housing inmates. Woodward epileptic colony under construction and Rockwell City reformatory planned. Oakdale sanatorium gains due to new building.

Boy Champion Corn Grower Ames

Wade Hauser, 17, of Hardin county is Iowa’s champion boy corn grower. His 150 110 bushels per acre on Hardin soil set a new record in a state contest conducted by Iowa State College. The Bidora Commercial Club will fund his San Francisco exposition trip, and a national title may follow from his profitable low-cost acre.

Twilight anaesthesia adopted by local surgeon

Dr Joseph A. Jerger, a general surgeon in Waterloo, reports successful use of twilight anaesthesia in major operations. The method avoids toxemia, severe vomiting, and other complications and is being closely followed by medical men.

Recovery Seen After Des Moines Driver Shot

Des Moines Wells Fargo express driver Ray Morgan was accidentally shot through the lungs with his own revolver. An operation to remove the bullet succeeded, and the attending physician says he has a fighting chance to recover, though initial reports suggested a fatal outcome.
