H A Bigelow, a leading Decorah resident and former county Democratic figure, died after a blow from a potato hoe by neighbor Professor T L Gifford over disputed shed land. Dubuque Youth Survives Bulllet Through Nose Incident
Frank Cosgrove a 19 year old from Dubuque was shot in the head by a 22 caliber bullet discharged by companion Peter Faber during a Mississippi river hunt. Jacob Groves a farmer twelve miles south of Burlington shot and killed Thomas Layton after Layton married Groves' divorced wife. Groves waited by a river bank and fired as the couple appeared in a row boat causing Layton's death. Groves later died by suicide in his cabin on Fry’s Island.
