Local Happenings Describe Colorado Conditions And Planting Delays
Ernest Brinkman, who went to Hugo Colorado, appeared in Algona last week and will stay all summer. He left his family to prove up his claim and will work at his trade to support them. He notes nine months with no rain in eastern Colorado, grain sown this spring lying unsprouted, while irrigated areas thrive. In the area Harvey Wadsworth found water close to the surface crops grow. much land remains non irrigable. Brinkman would not sell land at 100 dollars an acre if water access existed. The paper fears eastern Colorado remains a grazing region rather than arable, despite some soil and climate advantages. John Bingaman spent eleven years in Colorado with only one crop. Corn planting has been delayed by heavy rains. about half the corn in Kossuth remains unplanted. On higher ground planting fares better as no cold follow after rains. Overall crop prospects are discouraging. Dr. Gay suffered a singular accident carrying one of his operating knives in his coat.
