Appeal to Board on Restoring Stock Transport Privilege

Hough asks the state railroad commission to compel Iowa railroads to restore the $2 stock movement privilege between stations for loading. Railroads canceled the privilege. stockmen now pay two local rates if cars stop, raising cost per car by about $8.40 and delaying settlements. The board will review the issue amid broader costs and delays in public fund expenditures related to last year’s foot and mouth epidemic.

Prisoners Escape Histories Tie Iowa Parole Case

Iowa state agent Charles Sullivan travels to New York to fetch Thomas Osborne who violated parole. Osborne, Murphy, and Ryan, former Polk county offenders, fled to the West after leaving New York City in winter. Murphy had escaped Sing Sing by swimming the East River and is in California. Osborne will return to finish a ten year Iowa sentence after completing time in New York.

Grinnell cyclone survivor recalls 1882 ruin tale

Henry R. Baker of Grinnell Iowa recounts his escape from the upper floor as the west college collapsed during the 1882 cyclone. Buried head down for three and a half hours, a heavy window sill saved him from further harm while the town and Central college suffered total destruction.

A lightning strike killed two young girls from a traveling family in a covered wagon, camped near here bound for Nebraska. Other family members were stunned as neighbors gathered a purse of 900.

Alleged Forgery Suspect Sought After Car Fire

Port Dodge police seek a young man naming himself Joyce suspected of forging a check on Hawkes Motor Company for 2445 dollars. He fled in a Metz car with two associates from Varina. The vehicle caught fire two miles east of town and was completely destroyed.
