Fire destroys Matern herd and barn near St Benedict
A severe early morning fire at Wm Matern's farm four and a half miles northeast of St Benedict, sparked by a lightning strike during a thunderstorm, razed the barn and its prized stock. Eleven full blooded horses perished including a $2,000 stallion, along with a bull, heifers, harness, hay, grain, and other items. Valued at about $5,000 with $1,500 insured, the loss hit hard while Memorial Day crowds praised local band performances and community activity.

Electric road eyed between Algona and Fairmont
It now seems an electric road will be built within a year linking Algona to Fairmont via Seneca and Armstrong, avoiding East Chain. The route would attract heavier summer traffic, and promoters are urged to investigate. Also noted are local ads for glasses by Dr. Ripke and a 5 percent loan offer from A. D. Cuarke & Co.
