Weston the 74 year old walker reaches Frisco coast
A New Englander named Weston, 74, completed a 4600 mile coast to coast walk from New York to San Francisco in 1908. He started in March and reached the Golden Gate after about 100 days of walking averaging 46 miles daily. Along the way he endured deserts, mud, and varying hospitality, but kept a cheerful stride and a strong talky presence, credited with a record of remarkable endurance. He compared with elder walkers of the era, noting his approach differs from rival O Leary’s hip swinging style. Weston’s trek drew widespread public interest and he remained an engaging speaker when not walking.
