Iowa recruiting drive seeks men 21 to 45 for Fort Riley camp

Des Moines reports that Iowa has a quota of 350 men for the second officers training camp at Fort Riley Kansas but fewer than 200 have applied. Ralph Faxon notes age misperception kept many Des Moines and Iowa men from applying, says the camp will accept 21 to 45 with no prior service needed and that brains and leadership can still win officer posts.

New State Banker Messenger Sells Linden Interest

Des Moines reports George H. Messenger has sold his Linden bank stake to partner L. W. Flack and associates. He begins duties as state bank commissioner under the new law, desk in the auditor’s office pending a basement room fit for the bank department. J. M. Iowa Calf Club Work Expands Dairy Herds Across Iowa

More than 650 high grade dairy heifers have been imported and distributed through calf clubs in Iowa by the State Dairy Association in three months. Clubs have formed in What Cheer Barnes City Sutherland New Sharon Waterloo Iowa City Wellman Brighton and Gilmore City. Calves range from six to eight months in most clubs and from three weeks to five weeks in others. Heifers bred to purebred bulls of the same breed after 16 months aim to develop pure lines while preventing crossbreeding. Members may redeem or sell the calves at public auction at the end of the club period.

Mystery in a Death at Rome Bridge Mount Pleasant

Private Rudolph Hoelzen of Company J died under unclear circumstances on the Rome bridge. A coroner's jury has held three sessions and subpoenas were issued for the No. 1 passenger train crew to appear. The case remains unresolved with investigations ongoing.
