Wisconsin Democrats Rally for Gold Standard in State Convention

In Peoria the Wisconsin Democrats gathered in a commodious hall on Hamilton Avenue to choose a state ticket and national delegates. About 6,800 packed the building with thousands more turned away. Temporary chair Alexander Hamilton Bell spoke on reform, party loyalty, and the gold standard, criticizing eastern control and urging a fearless platform at the upcoming national convention. Delegates then acted, endorsing gold standard sentiment and electing at large delegates William F. Vilas Edward Bragg James G. Flanders and James J. Hogan, with a struggle for a fourth place favoring Hogan.

Altgeld Nominated for Illinois Governor at Democratic Convention

Altgeld of Peoria was unanimously placed atop the Illinois Democratic ticket for governor after the convention reconvened. He voiced reluctance, saying he did not want the position and cited physical unfitness and poor financial affairs. A strong free silver platform was adopted.

Knights of St John Hold Eighteenth Annual Convention

The Knights of St John opened their eighteenth annual convention in Dayton Ohio with several thousand members attending. The event is the last under the order’s new constitution which limits future gatherings to state commanderies. Bayard Honored With Oxford Ambassadeur Degree

United States Ambassador Thomas F. Bayard received the degree of D G Le from Oxford University in a June ceremony alongside other notable figures. Joseph Chamberlain and John Morley were among recipients, with Professor Francis Andrew Margh of Lafayette College also noted. Venezuelan dispute over crossing the Cuyuni line

Washington reports say Harrison and nineteen others crossed the left bank of the Cuyuni to open a road. Venezuela asserts the incident was not caused by Venezuelan fault and that the long observed status quo was broken by the Harrison surveying party. Henley Regatta Entries Hit Record Fifty Eight

Henley Regatta entries closed with fifty eight crews, the largest on record. The Grand Challenge Cup eight features Yale, Amsterdam Rowing Club, New College, Leander, Trinity College, and Eton.
