Fitzpatrick Again in Iowa Quote Parable of Growth
Fenton Iowans recount a satirical letter from January 17 1909 praising Iowa's industry and farming while criticizing inflated reports of Greene county prosperity. The colonial style piece laments misread wealth claims and a boot black turned hardware partner who swindled his associate.
Farm Grievances and Riches Turn to Lament in Iowa Letter
The letter laments a man who lost his wife and fortune, then built wealth through banking and hardware interests, while facing mortgages on several farms. It portrays him as now mad and watched night and day, with neighbors in Whittemore and Al gona identifying him. The writer defends farmers against Pangburn’s critiques, arguing weather and poverty thwart land values and calling for faith and resilience in Iowa farming communities. John Fitzpatrick signs the piece.
