Monument to Confederate valor carved on mountain side
The United Daughters of the Confederacy plan a vast Georgia monolith near Atlanta to portray Southern generals and armies. Artist Gutzon Borglum leads carving on a granite mountain owned by the Venable family, with 80 acres for a park and about 1200 figures across 2000 feet of rock. Estimated cost about 2 million dollars, four-year completion. The project asserts no hostility to the Union and seeks South pride in its heroes.
