Bank collapse leaves Lea county treasurer at risk of loss

John Menz, Lea county treasurer, had 1943.88 deposited in the Commercial bank of Edmund Jaeger & Co. The county board says he and his bondsmen may be held liable for the loss, with assets likely covering only 10 to 15 percent.

Thomas murder case advances on new chemical evidence

Des Moines court heard Dr. S. R. Macy testify that Mabel Schoffield’s stomach held chloral hydrate or poison, supporting the state on the night of the alleged murder. Dr. Taylor described arriving at the Thomas house and identifying Charles Thomas as involved. Cross examination touched his record, while defense introduced Ed Alquist claiming a sighting with Mabel Schoffield on October 21 1899 at Sixth Avenue and Locust Street.

Supt. Riggs Takes Charge of High School Delegation

Governor Cummins has asked Supt. Jno F Riggs to select high school representatives to attend the Washington inauguration. Miller Not Guilty Acquittal Of Bank Fraud Charge

Hampton case reports Miller of C. & Miller & Son, New Providence, acquitted of fraudulent banking after transfer from Hardin County court amid claims deposits were accepted while insolvent. Evidence shows deposits post March 21, 1904 largely returned. insolvency traced to large overdrafts. One account with a New Providence stock buyer was overdrawn about $17,000 and not collected.
