Wreck of White Plains Express Kills Many in Bronx
Sixteen passengers were killed outright and at least fifty seriously injured when the White Plains and Brewster express derailed near Woodlawn road on the Harlem division. The crash occurred after a curve, with cars piling, flames, and a halted train as investigators found rail defects under the Woodland road bridge. Coroner Schwannecker indicated a heavy object dropped on the rail may have caused the wheel to drop and the derailment.
