Lottery of Death Captains Sawyer and Flinn Saved by Lincoln
The Courier reprints a McClure's tale detailing Civil War prisoner Captains Henry W. Sawyer of New Jersey Cavalry and John M. Flinn of Indiana Infantry drawn by lot for execution in Libby Prison. President Lincoln privately devised a plan to retaliate if either were executed, which delayed and finally halted the hangings.
