Court Hears Lumber Tax Appeals and Guardianship Matters
Judge Quarton presided last Saturday with adjournment set for the 19th as several cases proceeded. The guardian of Mrs. Kistner, F. M. Curtis, was continued with an order to sell real estate. Queal Lumber Co and Northern Lumber Co challenged Germania’s board of equalization over taxes, questioning offsets of Iowa assets with debts in Minneapolis. Bu Kuba faced a drunkenness charge, bail set at $200 for a hearing on the 19th. Patterson-Cooper v Paine continued to the 21st. Ashelford v Parsons demurrer sustained. Tom Kelly v Manus Land Co granted a new trial.

Death of Dr Hudson ends long, pious career in Algona
Dr. Matthew H. Hudson died Monday night at 11 20 at the Reed residence after a long life of service. Born September 22 1818 in Southold Long Island he studied medicine and practiced in Brooklyn before a California stay and later routes in Illinois and Iowa. He moved to Algona in 1885, married Esther Halcock in 1846, and leaves a large family including Mrs B F Reed and Henry F H of Algona. He was a Congregationalist and a model of kindness and virtue who faced death with peace.

Big Barn Blaze Near Irvington Destroys Stock and Hay
A fire Tuesday evening engulfed a 30 by 74 foot barn on the Hutchison and Gilmore 400 acre Irvington farm. Thirty cattle and seven horses were in the barn, with 25 to 30 tons of hay and harnesses lost. All horses perished as the fire spread rapidly, horses owned by Hutchison Gilmore, cattle interest held by Vincent. Insurance covered the barn for 900 dollars. horses uninsured. The cause remains a mystery while plans to rebuild before spring face delays.
