New Depot Nearing Completion At Union Station

The new union station project advances rapidly with three concurrent fronts including the terminal depot and both approaches. Concrete foundations about 45 feet deep have been laid, and 900000 cubic yards of filling within the terminal plus 1000000 cubic yards for plaza and street grading are planned. If deposited on a city block the fill would rise 450 feet, and moving 2800000 cubic yards to prepare yards would form a hill as tall as the Washington monument, requiring nine to ten years of steam shovel work and 70000 trains of 12 cars each, spanning over 600 miles.
