Uncle Sam's Zoo Tale From Washington's Wildlife Show
A Rosary Magazine account traces how the Smithsonian became a national zoological Park origin story. It notes Langley’s push for a dedicated animal park, a 170 acre Rock Creek site, and Congress funding in 1899 for the National Zoological Park. It highlights rare acquisitions from Alaska muskox to a Tasmanian devil and a harpie eagle, plus the role of consuls, gifts, and private donors in building a world class collection.
