Des Moines reports Oklahoma and Washington officials pursuing Franke Shercliffe to face burglary charges from fourteen years ago. Assumed Risk Quashes Damages In Brooks V Joyce Co

Des Moines April 9 The Iowa Supreme Court ruled that an employee who understands dangerous working conditions has assumed the risk. In J F Brooks versus W T Joyce Co of Carroll County the lumber yard’s un-stacked hard wood flooring slid and broke Brooks’ leg. The court held that Brooks knew the danger and cannot claim damages, distinguishing cases where workers were unaware of risks.

Man Dies After Being Struck by Burlington Train

An unknown man believed to be a Russian Jew was struck by a Burlington freight near Ottumwa Tuesday afternoon and died in a local hospital yesterday. He was unconscious and provided no identification. In Spencer a grand jury is to hear indictments against witnesses in the Welghman perjury case, with Welghman recently acquitted there. In Des Moines detectives arrested three young boys aged 8, 10, and 11 after a burglary at the Iowa Seed store that saw high priced fowls stolen and sold for 15 cents each.

JUDGE JAEGER INDICTED IN KEOKUK BANK CASE

Judge Edmund Jaeger former head of the defunct Commercial Bank of Keokuk was indicted on three counts by the district grand jury. He is jailed after bail was set at 5000. His son Edward Jaeger, cashier, faces related scrutiny and both were leading Keokuk figures before the bank failure.

Matthews Charged with Double Murder in Des Moines

Roland Diggs and Bud Travis were slain in Des Moines on November 2, 1904 after Matthews returned from Texas. He allegedly shot Travis and Diggs at the Diggs home at 753 West Ninth Street, then wounded Mrs Diggs who escaped to an inner room. Mrs Matthews had left him after an affair and divorce, and he had since married a Black physician in Highland Park.
