Court Rules Railroads May Issue Only Stock Under Existing Iowa Law

Iowa district court judge ruled Liberty Oil lacked power to increase capital to 40000 by issuing 7 percent preferred stock. The decision holds that ordinary corporations may issue preferred stock only if explicitly provided in articles or statutes, a power not clearly granted outside railroad cases. The ruling affects Nelle Wilson’s injunction and questions legality of preferred stock in general corporations.

Suffragists Meet in Des Moines For Mississippi Valley Conference

Des Moines reports a large turnout as the Mississippi Valley Equal Suffrage conference opened at Berchel theater with overflow crowds at Plymouth Congregational church. Jane Addams delivered the closing address, noting shifts in male attitudes post ballot and changes seen in Chicago and elsewhere.

Pointer Pleads Not Guilty in Nevada Murder Case

Nevada man Pointer, indicted for murder, was arraigned in district court and entered a not guilty plea. Attorney Ike Douglass of Maxwell was appointed to defend him along with two city doctors to examine his condition. Pointer was brought from the Town sanitarium for arraignment, marking his first exit since the night he killed his 15 year old wife and attempted suicide on December 22. He has since regained speech after being paralyzed by the shooting.

Five Years For Pastorate At Des Moines Conference

Regulation recommending pastors serve five years on a charge rather than four was adopted at the Des Moines conference of the United Evangelical Church. Three ministerial delegates to the general conference to be held at Barrington, MI, include J. Amacher, J. G. Walz, and A. A. Couser, with alternates C. H. Stauffachen and C. Plakford. The three lay delegates are George Blerding, W. F. Stahl, and E. F. G. Fitzgerald, with Wid, Davis, and C. L. Mullen as alternates.

Former Adjutant General Ill in Des Moines to Ark for Treatment

Thrift, former adjutant general of Iowa, is seriously ill and has been taken to Hot Springs, Arkansas for treatment. He recently serves as superintendent of the National Cemetery at Alexandria bay.
