Pittsburg reports say C. Histon, alias Hixton, the Union Trust teller jailed for embezzlement, will gain a tidy fortune if his farm’s oil strike succeeds, even as bank efforts to recover funds continue. The bank estimates stolen sums range from 125000 to 600000, with partners including Wray and other Pittsburgh millionaires.
Fort Dodge Ia September 10 The Northwest Iowa conference of over 200 ministers serving 280 churches meets for appointments reports and ordinations. Tawa City Illinois reports John C. Lynch, age 40? 10? died by shooting himself in Wellman after protracted rheumatism torments. He had long been a local landlord. A daughter in Des Moines survived his death.
A valuable Rembrandt portrait was stolen from the West Side Carnegie Library in Waterloo. A note signed "Raffles" demanded a ransom and claimed the thief broke in to take cash but found none, saying his family would starve without money. The painting was by Miss Alice Johnson, daughter of banker Emmons Johnson, of Waterloo, and police are investigating.
Franklin County farmer T W Gaulke sues C W Gardner for 5900 damages claiming public insults malicious threats and accusations of stealing his wood. The case, slated for the October Franklin county term, features numerous witnesses subpoenaed amid local interest. A second item reports Jerry Turner, 26, an inexperienced balloon rider, dying after a 200 foot fall from a trapeze at the Mahaska county fair in OsKaloosa Iowa.
A. B. Garretson is appointed grand chief conductor of the Order of Railway Conductors at Cedar Rapids Iowa replacing Clark. Born in Winterset Iowa September 14 1855 his railroad career spanned Des Moines Osceola and Southern Missouri Pacific Missouri Kansas and Texas and Mexican National. He joined the order in the early 1880s and has been re elected grand senior conductor and assistant grand chief conductor since 1890 making him one of the oldest grand officers.
Alleged conspiracy led to the incarceration of two game wardens in Quasqueton Iowa as deputies investigated illegal fishing. Louis Neilson, fined for sei ne catching, had costs remitted after pleading guilty and promising payment. Wardens Greene and Brees faced arrest and bonds set at 400 dollars, but released after court found no action or evidence.
Miss Carrie Yeager living with her brother Jos Yeager four miles north of Baxter city was seriously hurt when a four mileh cow attacked while she tended stock. The animal gored her in the face tearing a large gash and also gored a leg leaving her bedridden. No internal injuries were found.
In Pittsburg on September 10, 20 year old Mrs. Rosie Kamp, a bride of five days, died at Braddock General Hospital from burns received while starting a fire with gasoline to make breakfast for her husband. She had just returned from her honeymoon and was preparing the first meal when the blaze spread.
The state railway commission heard evidence on western classification and prize package advertising. Railroads seek lower cereal rates and higher crockery rates for prize packages, while others push changes in rough stone and pottery rates and hay classification. About twenty railroad leaders attended the hearing, with debates over rate structures and industry impacts.
Clarence Mitchell of Sacramento California, 23, was found asleep on a West Liberty railroad track. He was taken to a hospital in Iowa City where his left leg was amputated below the knee this morning after a freight train fatally injured him last night.
In Clinton Iowa Second district Democrats nominated B G W Ball of Iowa City as their congressional candidate. Thomas Lambert of Babula received 41 votes on the informal ballot to Ball 63. Lambert moved for Ball to be unanimously nominated by acclamation amid cheers. Resolutions backed the Waterton platform and liberal river appropriations and opposed a Rock Island arsenal contract affecting labor.

Des Moines reports issued by the state crop service director Sage indicate that beneficial showers statewide have kept the corn crop largely safe for maturation. By September 30 most of the corn is expected to be safely mature, with three-fourths ready by September 20 under normal weather, and cutting should begin in early planted fields as plowing progresses.

Mrs. Mary J. Neff of Osceola withdraws divorce petition against Alvin Neff stock buyer valued at about 40000 dollars. Alimony of 12000 dollars was involved. Action started last week, created local excitement, and was terminated after a conference with both sides following Neff's return from a business trip.
Larchwood prepares for the annual harvest home picnic on September 12 with Claude R. Porter the Democratic nominee for governor speaking at 11 in the city park. In the afternoon Lennox Parker and Sioux Falls ball teams compete for a purse, plus a balloon ascension and band concert.
