Geddes was appointed from Iowa during the McKinley era. he has a military record since the Civil War.
Jens Paulson a farmer attacked his wife with an ax yesterday afternoon near Mineral Ridge two miles west of Trazer causing life threatening injuries. He fled the scene and deputies pursue him. Paulson is said to be demented and previously shot in the leg while fleeing a Boone officer.
Two men are sought for allegedly aiding murder attempts near Hera Vatu Falls Ja. W J Greelan is jailed on two murder attempt charges after striking neighbor Charles Leversee with a pitchfork fracturing the skull. Leversee is recovering. Neighbor Leo Tobias is jailed for threatening to murder his family. Creetan, a farmer, is described as prone to rage and considered dangerous. Jad Hoxie is wanted for attempting to beat his wife to death while intoxicated.
The new Ellsworth College in Otis City opens with a larger enroll ment than last year and attendance up over previous terms. The faculty is described as the strongest in years and every department is well equipped for study. Northern and central Town counties are well represented and athletics will be promoted.
Dubuque merchants plan a promotional trip by special Winds Central train departing September 1. A party representing the city’s principal business interests will visit original towns between tere and Lyle Minnesota to enthuse neighboring towns about the merit of Dubuque manufacturers and jobbers. The train will be accompanied by the military hand.
A 1-year-old son of John Hending, living northwest of town, escaped serious injury when a colt kicked him in the face while being turned out to pasture. The blow fractured bones and likely damaged the jaw. doctors fear facial disfigurement. Nearby, Lovilia burglars pried back windows stealing small items. Rice’s hardware lost revolvers and pocket knives. other stores reported minor jewelry, cash, and goods taken. A list of incidents follows, with reports of dogs and various local notices.
The United States case before the Alaskan boundary tribunal is summarized. Three explosions struck the Austrian steamer Vaskapu as she left Burgas for Constantinople. twenty nine people were killed, the ship caught fire and had to be beached near Misivroa Bay. Reports from London and Constantinople blamed Hungarian revolutionaries, with losses including crew and officers. The Vaskapu, of 1076 tons, was built at Newcastle in 1801 and operated by the Hungarian Levant Steamship company.
The Ida County Old Settlers association held its fourth annual reunion in Ida Grove on September 2. A $40 subscription funded the purchase of several acres in the youth section of Williams Park. Governor Cummins gave a long address praising Iowa's achievements and urged progressive and ideal policies, stating I am not a wound-putter on anything.
