Murderous assault on wife ends in self destruction near Sanborn

Peter Gettman a 60 year old German farmer three miles east of Sanborn Iowa, beat his wife with a stove poker during a quarrel over a house then walked a mile to a haystack and killed himself with a pocket knife. The battered wife survived though badly bruised. Neighbors described Gettman as even tempered but the quarrel over property led to the deadly attack and tragedy. He had remarried a year earlier in Grant county Minnesota.
