Left in Guam Seven passenders exiled from ship Sheridan

Manila Sept 27 report that seven passengers including two ladies were left on Guam when the transport Sheridan sailed after Brig. Gen. Grant and party. Frank W. Spicer of Northfield Minnesota, a former Algona High School teacher, is among the stranded. The crew and others awaited clearance, then departed with the rest of the party. The list of local election results and tax matters fills the remainder of the dispatch with officials declared elected and budget notes.

Ledyard Rebuilding Sparks Town Pride in New Brick Block

After a devastating fire the Led yard business district rises anew with a brick block near completion. The State Bank of Ledyard vaults and offices, I I Bleich drugstore, N Tillimoney general store, E F Skinner hardware, and P I Ketman general stock fill the row. The 60 foot deep rooms front pressed brick facades, grade work on Main Street proceeds under J Jenks with over a thousand yards of dirt moved. Ledyard residents celebrate enterprise and look for a town reborn.

Nichols at Luck Discovers Huge Bessemer Ore Mine

A St Paul dispatch reports H Nichols formerly of Burt and two companions found a vast Bessemer ore deposit on August leased school land four miles from Virginia Minnesota. Officials estimate 10,000,000 tons of ore. State royalty at 25 cents per ton could yield about 2.5 million dollars.

Board Proceedings Shows Vote Totals From Regular Session

The board of supervisors met in regular session November 11, 1909 with J. G. Smith as chairman and members Barton Weisbrod Ed Kunz and F B Jenks. As canvassers they found totals for governor votes including Cumming 2635 Phillips 1380 Coates 42 Baxter 4 Miller 1 totaling 4062 and lieutenant governor Herriott 2689.

District Court Opens With Full Docket Of Cases

The district court opened Monday with a full docket of cases across many law and fact phases. The Burt diphtheria suit against G G Wheeler and Dr Peters dominated proceedings, with testimony from Peters, Kenefick, Gay and Morse and a later ruling releasing Peters from the suit. The jury panel includes Alfred Welfare, Wim Cosgrove, J M Heck, and others. the trial nears verdict with much testimony and contested issues.

Mrs Julia McDermott Dies After Ill Health

Mrs Julia McDermott died Monday after months of ill health. Born in Ireland 72 years ago she came to the United States as a child, married John McDermott in 1853, and moved to Kossuth County in 1878 before settling in Algona 11 years ago on the old homestead farm. Her husband died about 11 months ago. Surviving children include Mrs Ed Gurren of Armstrong, T G of Mason City, Will on the homestead, John in Cresco, and Mae a well known teacher. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church with Father Halpin officiating.

A timely bequest grants an Algona girl five thousand dollars from an uncle who recently died abroad. The public note highlights modesty, confirming the gift will provide a solid start for her future, as the family prepares for upcoming events.
