First Treasurer of Dakota Lived Without Money at 97
Whiting Te April 28 Samuel C Keish residing here in good health at the age of 97 years is the only man living or dead who ever served as treasurer of a state or territory without ever possessing any money of the commonwealth. Irish was first treasurer of Dakota territory four times the size of New York and gained the office by driving out a US marshal Pinney, who handled ballots. The final count showed more ballots than voters and Irish charged Pinney with fraud, escorting him from the building. The election was sent to Washington and declared valid during Buchanan’s presidency 1857-1861. There had been no tax levy and Irish left office to become second lieutenant.
