Des Moines reports indicate Senator Hubbard’s senatorial redistricting bill will be called soon and likely face a tough showdown. Democrats stand solid against it, fearing loss of districts, while many Republicans hesitate, risking a combine that could kill the measure. The northwest would gain population leverage under reform, contrasted with southeast districts, complicating passage amid partisan divides.
J Wesley Elkins pleads for careful inquiry into his twelve year prison record to prove reform, asking Clayton County citizens to consider a parole or suspended sentence under monitored conditions. He cites remorse, strenuous study, and intent to live lawfully, pledging honest effort if released.

In Newton on March 19 Rev John Ferguson of the United Presbyterian church was away when an intruder entered his East Washington street home. Mrs Ferguson awakened to a chloroform scented handkerchief over her face and fainted, a physician summoned. No valuables were stolen as the suspected burglar hid in the pastor's study and fled undetected.
In Creston Iowa on March 19 two gamblers, John Jackson and John Robinson, fought with revolvers and knives. Robinson was wounded in the hip, Jackson slashed in the face. A 14 year old newsboy Albert Ochslager was killed by a bullet intended for Robinson. Jackson is jailed and Robinson is hospitalized as public outrage runs high.
Crescent Ta March 19 Harry Watts aged 17 son of Watts of this place was cut by a knife in two or three places by George Saratt who attacked after Watts and about a dozen companions taunted him while he walked home with a young woman from church. Saratt, recently arrived from Nebraska, fled the scene with a warrant out for his arrest pending apprehension.
Silas Johnson, 17, jailed in Webster City after attempting to wreck a Northwestern freight Monday night two miles north of Jewell. He placed a large obstacle on the track, halted by the engineer, then confessed. Bound over for grand jury in April. penalty ranges from two years to a penitentiary sentence.
Peter Otto’s body was found near the Union Pacific bridge. no friends known in Sloan or nearby towns. Authorities consider death from a fall or robbery as possible. inquest undecided. A letter from J Peterson was found, but Peterson’s address shows he left Omaha long ago. George A Thom, a farmer, lives four miles from Sloan.

A Hoboken pier of the Phoenix line burned yesterday, destroying the steamship British Queen and several lighters. Fire spread to the Barber and Maasdam piers, with losses estimated at 300000 to 400000 for piers and the Queen, plus 200000 for cotton and goods. Crew and bystanders escaped, though reports indicated possible lives lost and a chief engineer unaccounted for. Fireboats battled the blaze as tugs moved ships to midstream to prevent total destruction.
G G Houghton vice president of Wisconsin National Bank died in Milwaukee at age 70. In Washington Henry Hitchcock, brother of Secretary Hitchcock, died at 71 of heart trouble at his St. Louis home. he was former president of the St. Louis Bar Association with broad legal renown.
The president sent to the Senate on March 23 nominations for Nebraska positions. Albert L. Towle of Valentine is named Receiver of Public Moneys and James C. Pettijohn of Valentine is named Register of the Land Office.
Following a state health board meeting in Lincoln on March 20 the secretary was ordered to contact federal authorities about the best means to stamp out smallpox after announcing 764 cases in the state.
A large order has been received by Booth St. Joseph horse and mule market for 12,000 horses to be delivered at 600 monthly for twenty four months. Most are believed corralled for the British army in South Africa.
