July 24 Lewis Indiana A barking dog woke James Aston owner of the Baratoga restaurant and the Meredith building next door caught fire. Fire extinguished quickly with clerks assisting. Fire suspected incendiary as kerosene ashes found near the start area.
The self confessed murderer Willam Numley, a young light skinned man from Ohio, is jailed at Denison after fatally stabbing Milwaukee brakeman Dr Powell near Arion. Numley says Powell ordered him off a train. when refused, Powell stepped on his hand and Numley stabbed him with a packet knife. Sheriff followed his muddy tracks and captured him.
Des Moines dispatch reports Iowa boards establishing a ward for inebriates at Mt Pleasant State Hospital under a new law. Twelve applications already on file. Cherokee hospital aimed for August opening but delays push completion past mid August. Also notes harvest begins in Lyon County with labor shortages and shifting crop focus. deaths at Fonda and a drainage meeting planned. Odd Fellows Grand Lodge in Des Moines expects President Roosevelt to speak during September meeting.
