In Ocheydan Iowa on January 26 an eight year old boy and a companion balanced on cattle guards when his foot slipped between boards. The passenger train passed at speed, severing the foot but the boy held firm on the fence, saving his life. The engineer did not realize distress until after the train stopped. The lad is expected to recover.
In Waterloo Tennessee on January 23 an aged immigrant from Corat'e named Peter Uzelae spoke into a phonograph to share his tale. Language barriers with Greeks Italians Russians Germans Prussians Poles and others prevented understanding. A phonograph record was mailed to the American consul at Vienna for translation into English.

Donald P. Tuthill, 48, died of brain hemorrhage on a Milwaukee and St. Paul train between Mason City and Britt Iowa last night. He had been traveling from Britt to visit his ailing mother.
Monroe Shepsard of Sioux Falls was robbed of 148 dollars and his watch last night in Waterloo Iowa after a visit in Wisconsin. He was returning home from Wisconsin to Sioux Falls when the incident occurred.
Thames B Frith of Dubuque aged 98 died this morning from paralysis after living in the city for fifty years. He was well known in local circles and had resided here since longstanding.
In Dubuque Judge Benson ruled against Captain Langestaft who sought a city records clerkship under the soldiers' preference law. Washington reports a River and Harbor appropriation bill totaling 83,466,138 with 34,624,612 to be available in 1907 and 1908 and 48,834,526 for continuing contracts. The measure will be sent to the House for consideration next week.
