Patrick Noonam, aged about MM years, was struck by a West Den passenger train one half mile west of Remsen while crossing the tracks. The engineer could not stop in time. the body was found near the bend and taken to Remsen, identified by letters in his clothing. An ID card named his brother in Jem-inetsburg, Tit. for notification. The man’s home location remains unknown.

A 22 year old man, Mimil Gottard, was instantly killed by a lightning strike on his parents farm southwest of Newton. He entered the pasture to check the cows and was found dead, with no signs of life or injuries. The accident occurred on the farm grounds in broad daylight.
A man from five miles west of Indianola, McAddo, was killed instantly when lightning struck his barn. His father narrowly escaped in the blaze that followed, as the hay loft and barn were engulfed in flames.
An Aug incident reports Chernliew Martin Main age 63 killed instantly by lightning while a young man Louis Carr aided by another man climbed the hayloft of a barn. Carr was knocked unconscious. the barn and its substantial private property burned after the strike. The horses were removed. Main’s body was recovered before the barn burned.
Two gasoline blasts shook Council Bluffs Iowa on August 26 injuring Mrs Charenve Steveint who was preparing breakfast and wrecking the James grain elevator. Firefighters hurried to extinguish fires in both incidents with no additional injuries reported.
Fort Dodge Iowa August 20 The county convention drew a large crowd with many candidates for the four county offices. The contest focused on Colby the clerk and judge positions with Holi and Suit among rivals. Dolliver spoke briefly addressing the gathering.
G R Whitmer representative of this district has sold his interest in the Farmers National Bank at Primghar to G R Slocum of St Paul. Slocum formerly cashier of the first National Bank at Primghar and a stockholder remains with that institution. Whitmer may move to Sioux City and may resign as a member of the O Brien county legislature.
Dispatches report the Vladivostok fleet including five battleships and the cruiser Pallada reaching Port Arthur as Admiralty holds hope for their escape. Other cables note Japanese destroyers entering Chefoo harbor, a Russian mine sinking Otvajin class ship near Linli promontory, and renewed battle prospects near Liao Yanyan with Japanese advances from Mukden.
A sharp clash near Port Arthur in August 1904 spanned August 15 to 17 with heavy Russian losses. Japanese forces captured Pigeon Bay forts and other positions, while siege guns aided the right wing. Despite fierce fighting, fears of the fortress fall seem unlikely as refitted ships and ammunition remain. orders urge destruction of ships if retreat becomes impossible. Meanwhile the Baltic squadron near Cronstadt faces debate over immediate sailing versus waiting for Port Arthur conditions to clarify.
Reports from St Petersburg detail crushing losses and high casualties for the Port Arthur squadron, with Gromoboi and Russia heavily damaged and Vladivostok squadron likely destroyed. Kamimura's squadron drew off amid heavy damage, while funds pour in for relief. Chefoo notes confirm battleships returning, though fate of other ships unclear. White Sulphur Springs West Virginia August 12 Senator Davis led one of the largest gatherings seen here as he spoke to supporters from a prominent campaign event featuring a sizable turnout and notable enthusiasm for his message in the region.
Chicago August 22 a secrecy meeting of thirty leading labor leaders is reported. Most represent unions not tied to the stock yards strike. Secrecy surrounds the plan and it is hinted a bold move may be made to force affairs to a head and end the prolonged struggle.
Chicago Aug 2 The failure of every effort to settle the packing trades strike has dampened thousands of workers in Chicago and packing centers. Donnelly plans to head off a break in St Louis with a Sunday meeting as Chicago drivers grow restless awaiting relief funds from AFL leaders and union treasuries. Reports of lawlessness surface while plants keep running and byproducts plants operate at near normal, despite rumors of uprisings and several false deadly stories debunked by police.
In Chicago on August 22 packing house workers and hungry strikers pursued eleven runaway cattle after a riot. By morning four carcasses were recovered while hoofs and horns remained. five more steers were missing, with only two recovered and the rest still in doubt as homes enjoyed meat scarce in prior days.
Cleveland O Aug 22 The first effort of the manufacturers to break the cloakmakers strike began as fifty non union cloakmakers arrived from New York aboard the Nickel Plate. Twenty nine sided with the union upon disembarking and the others were placed on streetcars. A crowd of about two thousand surrounded them downtown, stones were thrown and police dispersed the mob after a riot call.
