Early settler George Smith 1820–1900s remembered in Iowa tribute
Residing in Sassuth County since 1865, George Smith died April 2 surrounded by his children and old army comrades. Born in Banffshire Scotland in 1820, he married Jean Ross in 1844 and came to the United States in 1848. Enlisting in 1862, he served with the 143rd Infantry under Hooker to Sherman. He moved to Algona about 19 years ago, father of 13 children, 11 surviving. Funeral held at Hugh Smith's home with Rev. Nolmes officiating. burial in Whittemore Cemetery with the James C. Taylor post present. Peace to his ashes.
