Justice Van Devanter announced to President Roosevelt his retirement from active service on June 2. The seventy eight year old conservative associate justice informed the White House before the Senate Judiciary Committee vote on the court enlargement bill.

President Roosevelts Pressing for Full Program in Conference

President Roosevelt held talks with Democratic congressional leaders and department heads insisting on enacting his complete program. He demanded passage of the Supreme Court enlargement bill, a substitute for the NRA, $1.5 billion for 1938 work relief, farm tenancy loans, a national power and flood control policy, and 15 percent discretionary cuts to appropriations defended as House plan. A 50 woman Workers' Alliance of America group rallied in Washington urging $3 billion for 1938 relief and planned to occupy the House gallery during the debate.

Supreme Court Backs Social Security Act Tax Rulings

The Supreme Court handed down decisions upholding the Social Security Act constitutionality while sustaining the 1936 revenue law that limits refunds of processing and floor stock taxes imposed by the agricultural adjustment act. The treasury avoided nearly a billion dollars. the opinion says relief via burden shifting negates a claim of constitutional injury. A second decision affirmed Louisiana's chain store tax, allowing taxation on chain unit counts both inside and outside the state.

Steel Industry Strike Hits Pittsburgh and Aliquippa

C I O official PoHULIP MURRAY led a walkout at Jones & Laughlin Steel plants in Pittsburgh and Aliquippa, affecting 27,000 workers after demands for a signed contract were unmet. The strike spread to Pittsburgh Steel in Monessen and Allenport, pa where 5,900 joined. Murray warned other major mills would soon be drawn in. The Jones & Laughlin company agreed to a contract if a government supervised majority vote endorsed union representation.

Treasury plans silver depository near West Point

The Treasury Department announced approval from the secretary of war to use a four acre tract near West Point New York for a silver depository. The 1936 building plan called for about $600 000 in construction. Unlike Fort Knox gold vaults, the silver storage will not use vaults.
