Fine Convention of Rebekahs District 42 Held in Unmson Hall

A well attended 25th convention of the Rebekahs district 42 met Friday May 18 in Unmson hall with 154 registered and more present. Mrs Marie Butts of Wesley led and gave the main address with her husband Guy Butts also speaking. Rebekah lodges from Iowa Falls Eldora Union Hubbard Ackley Buckeye and Alden participated. The F B E F society served a supper at the Methodist church basement for about seventy visitors.

Bank Robbery at Spring Valley Leaves $15000 Stolen

Four masked men robbed the First National Bank at Spring Valley Minnesota taking $15000. They forced six employees and two patrons to lie on the floor and fled in an automobile. A spectator reported the license as Iowa 85 607. Mrs. Herman Backhaus identified that as her husband’s stolen car from March 28 on a highway at Moni.

Mulcting the counties shows conservative Iowa banks

Hardin and a few counties in Iowa have not received state sinking funds due to no losses from failed banks. Since the guarantee law began 1854 claims total $10,310,892.63 with $4,382,673.65 reimbursed from diverted county interest and $2,695,426.66 from dividends. Anticipatory warrants under $3,500,000 remain. Claims paid span school districts, counties, townships, cities, and state. Largest insured public funds payout was $630,112.36 in Kossuth. Polk led diverted interest at $217,788. Cerro Gordo led dividends at $358,536.73. Clarke paid the least diverted interest at $12,380.51.

State Fair Premiums Highlight Iowa School Exhibition

An all Iowa schools exposition for the 1928 Iowa State Fair will showcase complete student work across public schools, colleges, and universities. With the new 350000 education building space, the display becomes the largest in state history, offering 1247.50 in premiums and state championships for rural, consolidated, and town schools. Also featuring exhibits from superintendents, teachers, and about 15 colleges led by Agnes Samuelson, state superintendent of public instruction.

Modern House on Wheels Built on Ford Stock Car Chassis

Eldora inventor Frank Stielow builds a living unit on a new Ford stock car chassis at a Marshalltown factory. The 6 by 6 by 10 foot home includes hot and cold water, furnace, bath, lavatory, kitchenette, beds, dressing table, radio space, wardrobe, and a 15-pound boat attached to the side. The Stielows plan an extended motor trip through Michigan, Canada, and Pacific coast states.

Witnessed Lincoln Shooting by Ford Theatre Survivor

W J Garles 81, who died last week at his Feldora home, was in Ford’s theatre in Washington the night President Lincoln was shot by J Wilkes Booth and witnessed the shooting. He spent most of his life in this and Grundy counties after moving to Iowa as a youth.

German youth spared deportation with fare settlement

Uncle Sam will reward an ingenious German by permit ting him to stay in the United States. John Koenig shipped items labeled as household goods. Deportation proceedings ended when relatives paid the difference between freight and passenger fare.

Home Economics Club Holds Year End Meeting

The Home Economics department wrapped up its year with a gathering at Mrs. Schalk’s home hosted by Mrs. Sheaffer and Mrs. Van Voorhis. Officers were elected with Mrs. Fuller as chair, Mrs. Pickersgill as vice chair, Mrs. Mulford as secretary, and Mrs. Bushman as treasurer. The program featured a luncheon menu and a look ahead to next year’s plans.
